What’s better a Legal or Symbolic Wedding in Punta Cana? 🤔

The idea of getting married in a place as magical as Punta Cana is the dream of many of us. Being surrounded by the sand, the breeze and the beautiful colors that the sea of this place offers us make it the perfect scenery.

However, it’s crucial to think about what you’ll need to do to get married in Punta Cana. It is vital to plan ahead in order for things to go smoothly.

Whether you’re looking to throw a symbolic wedding or seal the deal with an official ceremony, you’ll want to tackle the process strategically to ensure that every detail is addressed in advance.

Legal Marriage in Punta Cana

One of the most challenging aspects of getting married in the Dominican Republic is obtaining a marriage license. Before a marriage can be considered legitimate in Punta Cana, a number of documents are required. Because every document must be notarized, translated into Spanish, and certified, couples should begin this procedure a few months before the wedding. Religious and civil marriages are the two forms of weddings. The primary distinction is that religious marriages are not recognized while legal marriages are.

For a civil ceremony, the following documents are required:

  • Original passport with photocopy of the id page, and the last entries to the country

  • Affidavits of marital status, certifying that the bride and groom are single

  • Original birth certificates

  • Divorce Certificate(s) or Death Certificate(s), if aplicable

  • Two or more witnesses with valid passports, other than family members

The fundamental prerequisite for a religious ceremony is to obtain permission from an archbishop in the couple’s country of residency, which must be delivered to the local Dominican archdiocese.

The following documents are required:

  • Pre-matrimonial Certificate

  • Affidavits of Marital Status

  • The couples Birth Certificates

  • Certificate of Civil Marriage legalized by the Dominican Consulate, if the couple has already married in their country

  • Baptism Certificates

  • Certificates of Confirmation

  • Church Annulment Certificate(s), if aplicable

As you can see, getting legally married in Punta Cana can be a complicated process, this is why most couples who decide to have a destination wedding choose to have a Symbolic Ceremony and legalize their marriage in their countries of origin, either before or after the celebration of their wedding in this paradisiacal place.

Symbolic Ceremony

A symbolic wedding can look and feel just like a regular wedding ceremony where you say your vows, exchange rings and even sign an artificial wedding certificate – but it’s not legally binding. A symbolic ceremony is a testament of your love to one another but won’t be legally recognized in the country where you’re saying “I do”.

Symbolic weddings are less costly, and a great choice for busy couples that prefer to bypass gathering and completing the documentation required for a legally-binding ceremony in a foreign country.

It is also a wonderful idea to renew your vows, wedding anniversaries or for people already married, all this in an unforgettable way. Usually lasts between 20 - 30 minutes, it depends on how much the bride and groom reveal of their story, wishes and dreams. The more information and inputs we get, the more comprehensive and interesting the ceremony can be.

Whether or not you have a legal or symbolic ceremony dials down to preference. Lots of couples love the flexibility of a symbolic ceremony. Since there are no rules, you can have a friend or family member officiate and incorporate any cultural traditions or personalized touches into your ceremony. On the other hand, some couples prefer to be legally married on the same day they hold their ceremony. It’s all about what you prefer and are comfortable with!

The idea of having a destination wedding ceremony is to celebrate love with your partner and enjoy the place you travel to.
